Croydon Heritage Festival and the Croydon Advertiser have today, Friday 17April 2015, launched a competition inviting creative young people to imagine what Croydon will look like in the future, and what will make the town famous in years to come.
With the town on the brink of exciting changes and redevelopments, anything is possible in Croydon. Skip forward 10, 100 or 1,000 years into Croydon’s future…what will the skyline look like? What will Croydon residents be wearing? What futuristic vehicles will they be driving and what will they be eating? Whether it’s a vision of the future inspired by architecture, fashion, food, science, technology, transport or entertainment, young creative Croydonians are invited to let their imaginations run wild.
Open to all young people who study or live in the borough, the best work will be displayed in the Heritage Exhibition for the duration of the Festival, from Saturday 20 June to Sunday 28 June, and featured in a special Future Croydon issue of the Croydon Advertiser on Friday 26 June. With separate competitions running for primary and secondary schools, applicants can submit artwork, photographs or stories to illustrate what future Croydon may look like.
Winners will be announced during an event celebrating Croydon’s Famous Future in central Croydon on the afternoon of Saturday 27 June. Prizes include an iPad, a £100 Centrale gift card, a ‘money-can’t-buy’ afternoon spent with a local contemporary artist courtesy of Rise Gallery in St Georges Walk, and a prize presentation at Crystal Palace Football Club. The winning primary school class entry will also be displayed within Croydon trams and given an exclusive tour of Tramlink Depot at Therapia Lane.
Martin Corney, Chief Executive of The Whitgift Foundation comments, ‘Croydon Heritage Festival is in place to celebrate and create pride in the town’s past, present and future and we are very excited to be working with more young people in 2015 – this is an opportunity for Croydon’s younger generation, undeniably the future of the borough, to showcase their vision of Croydon’s future and we can’t wait to see their artwork.’
