We’re very excited to announce that our all-new-for-2015 Famous Croydon Walking Tour, curated by the good folks at Wandle Park Heritage Project, has now arrived.
Download it here, grab a copy from our pop-up exhibtion in the Whitgift Centre, or pick up a copy of this all-new walking tour in this month’s Croydon Citizen newspaper, available at outlets throughout the borough.
This self-guided tour takes you and your family on a journey of discovery, through the historic streets of central Croydon and uncovers the town’s famous past and present. You’ll start and finish your walk at East Croydon station. Along the way you’ll see beautiful parklands, impressive one-time private residences; regal churches including Croydon Minster – a site of worship since Anglo-Saxon times, and buzzing near-1000-year-old markets.
The tour also includes our very own 400 year old Almshouses, currently home to some 15 long-term residents. As part of the festival the Almshouses’ gates will open on the 20th of June. Tickets for this unique open house experience are very limit, so book your place today and combine the Famous Croydon Walking Tour with a peek inside our historic and atmospheric Almshouses.
The walk takes around one and a half to two hours and is easily navigated by participants of all fitness levels and ages. For those wishing to make a day of the walk, there are a number of ideal picnic spots and a wide selection of watering holes along the route.
It is with special thanks to The Wandle Park Heritage Project, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Croydon Council and Handelsbanken that we’ve been able to bring you this beautiful and brilliant tour, so get your best boots on and take in all that #FamousCroydon has to offer.
